Healthcare and community professionals receive very little training on recognizing and treating child and adolescent victims of sexual exploitation or trafficking. Labor and sex trafficking victims rarely self-report but may have complex medical and mental health needs related to their extremely stressful living conditions. It is critical that healthcare and community providers learn to consider the possibility of trafficking when treating adolescent patients, recognize the risk factors and screen appropriately, conduct thorough assessments and provide appropriate treatment and community referrals.
